Being a mum is expensive and when you start a business, everything seems to need money invested. Starting a business when you're on a limited budget can seem impossible at first. But not everything has to cost. In this post, I will share my knowledge on how to start a business as a mum, even if you don't have any money. I will also discuss about what to prioritise and share some time-saving hacks that help you to balance the work-life commitments.
Make a plan
Before you begin working on your business idea, you need to start with a solid action plan. This means taking a step back and deciding on your life goals, business goals and your objectives. Taking a course on planning, like the school holiday action plan for mums, can provide you with practical strategies and resources to balance your business and family commitments. By doing the groundwork to start your plan, you'll be more focused and able to get where you want to be faster, even when juggling both your business and family life.
Focus on what you're good at
I read a great thread recently that said "The average person could replace their salary by talking about one thing they do exceptionally well on the internet every day for 12 months". It struck a chord. As a mum, you already wear many hats, and you may not have the time or resources to explore a new business idea that requires a lot of learning. Instead, focus on what you already know and what you're good at. Whether it's your existing job-related skills or your hobbies and talents, choosing something that you're passionate about and have experience in can be a good starting point for your business. And then go all-in.
Use time-saving hacks
One of the biggest challenges of being a mum entrepreneur is finding time to work on your business. Luckily, several time-saving hacks can help you maximise productivity, like time-blocking, to-do-list management, automation and even delegation to your spouse and children. You may not have the the budget for a VA right now but these techniques all help you structure your days to be more productive and focused.
Leverage social media
Social media is a cost-effective way of marketing your new business and it's a great way to start with no cost. It's a great way for building relationships with potential customers, partners, and mentors can help you grow your business without any initial investment.
Starting a business as a mum may seem daunting, but it's possible, even with no money. With a strong plan, focus on your existing skills and passions, and implementing time-saving hacks and networking, you can achieve success. Remember, it's essential to prioritise your mental and physical well-being, along with your family commitments, while building your business. You can do this!
